Calhoun took over the Falcons this year following the retirement of Fisher DeBerry who stepped down after 23 seasons at the academy. Calhoun who was the Mountain West Conference's coach of the year inherited a team that had suffered through three consecutive losing seasons including a 4-8 record in 2006. The program made some significant improvements offensively however averaging 29.4 points and 418.9 yards per game - both second best in the conference. Calhoun also found a better use for senior Chad Hall who was named the conference's offensive player of the year. After initially struggling to find a role for Hall who is listed at 5-foot-8. 180 pounds. Calhoun decided to give him more carries later in the season. The tailback exploded in the final seven games averaging 179.6 yards rushing and scoring 11 of his 14 rushing touchdowns in that stretch. This is the Falcons' first bowl game since losing to Virginia Tech in the 2002 San Francisco Bowl. They are 8-8-1 in bowl games going back to the 1957 season. Cal leads the all-time series against Air Force. 5-2. The Bears won the last meeting 56-14 in 2002.
This may be a very familiar look for tonight's notionally televised game. Funny that the Appy's might start and end the year defeating the winged helmet. The ACC Basketblog (even Catamount Birkel) Salutes you. GO APP!!!
: "Season that includes win at Michigan needs win in Chattanooga. The story Corey Lynch enjoys most happened during the Major League Baseball playoffs in Ohio State-obsessed Cleveland just weeks after Appalachian State had opened the college football season with its now-famous upset of Michigan."
: "Appalachian State University's memorable defeat of the Wolverines helped define the country's sporting landscape this year."
: "At Appalachian State it's called "The Game For The Ages." Fans wanting a way to commemorate the Mountaineers' shocking upset of Michigan can get limited edition artwork travel mugs posters and T-shirts."
: "The Mitchell report gives a general road map for improving baseball's drug testing but prescribes no timetable and few specific orders." Isn't it odd that as soon as King Roger gets named everyone wants to start doubting the validity of the report. We heard an ESPN commentator say this: "The very fact that Clemons and his legal team undergo vehemently denied these allegations must raise doubts as to the findings." Really.... When Mike Vick said "These allegations are false and I look forward to clearing my good name" did that raise doubts as to the feds inspect against him? When Bonds allegedly said "I have never knowingly taken steroids"... and has publicly said "I have never failed a test" did that raise doubts as to truth of the allegations lodged against him? Not so sure why the media rushes to the side of "mercy patience and letting time tell us the truth" with Clemons but takes out the pipes and blow torches on Bonds and Vick. Won't time reveal the complete truth on all such matters. Don't agree? Take it to the comments section.• • •
Thomas Boswell: -"Roger Clemens joins Barry Bonds in the slow burn that lasts a lifetime and then after death lingers as long as the game is played."
: "Barry Bonds and his supporters often pointed to the fact that the home run king never flunked a drug evaluate administered by Major League Baseball. The Mitchell Report suggests why: it appears Bonds received advanced warning of two tests in 2003." Interesting.. interesting...
: "ESPN experiment to have 24/7 coverage from Charlotte. Lights camera. Bobcats. When the boss says ESPN gets all-access then ESPN gets all-access. That means television radio and the Internet. It means shaking up the normal routine of a home game day. It also means national exposure like the Charlotte Bobcats have never experienced." Sounds cool.
: Arkansas ain't Michigan. If this is true and they make him the offer and he decides to go you really can't be mad at him despite his professions of love for the players at Wake. Michigan is Michigan. Here's hoping he stays in the ACC!!!
:"Wake Forest can move a step closer to its first national championship in men's soccer today if it can get past a hot Virginia Tech team in the NCAA College Cup semifinals in Cary. Second-seeded Wake Forest the highest seeded team left among the final four will compete No. 11 Virginia Tech at 5 p m in the first of two games at the SAS Soccer Complex. Unseeded Massachusetts will play No. 5 Ohio State the Big Ten back in the second game at 7 p m. and the winners will meet at 3 p m. Sunday."
: "David Cutcliffe and Karl Dorrell have emerged as the top two candidates in that request as Duke’s search for its next football coach begins to show signs of winding down."
: "Duke junior Martynas Pocius has been dealt another tough break but Pocius is determined to view it as a potential big break."
One of the topics that keeps coming up (especially after this upset-filled year) is college football's (just talking FBS here) best conference. I've heard a million arguments; some good some downright stupid. Then. I thought:You can't play football forever right? And they're student-athletes right? So which conference is best. in academics?I did a little math and got the GSR (Graduation Success evaluate) of all the Division 1 (FBS) teams* then found the averages of the individual conferences. Here's the lowdown. According to the NCAA's touch channel the GSR measures the aggroup's percentage of players who-began college between 1997-2000 and-graduated in six yearsThis is the third year that they've used the GSR formula instead of the Federal evaluate which counted transfers and players who left the team as non-graduates.
A be at what’s news in college football from recruiting to the National Championship Game. This is also home of the In The Bleachers broadcast where you can listen to something insightful and natural instead of all the talking heads.
While everyone is complaining how the BCS as a whole is not working; and how college football needs to move more toward a playoff. I evaluate there is some other issues inside the BCS that need addressed. First and foremost the coaches should
be allowed to have a say in who gets to play in the BCS Games.
Before I get into my rant about how they vote just look at the facts on the surface. Most of the week coaches pay time preparing for their opponent which for at least 70% of the time are conference foes. Secondly how much football other than their game do you think the check on Saturdays? My guess is pretty minimal. But yet when it comes to the BCS rankings the USA Today Coaches poll counts for 33% of the billing. I am cause to be perceived enough to cognise that for some schools the SID fills out the ranking sheet each week but does that make it any better?
outlines another well known fact about the coaches poll for the most part the coaches choose on conference lines. There is so much money involved when a conference gets an extra team in a BCS Bowl bet and for the BCS conferences all of the teams split the money (not-equally) and that is a big plus for the team’s budget for the next season.
Luckily for us the. Below are some “unique” voting habits that I and a few other ITB people noticed in the final poll.
- Bob Stoops apparently thinks that LSU is the 6th best team in the nation and that 3 of the top 4 teams in the nation reside in the B12.
- Big10 coaches went out of their way to alter sure that Illinois made the BCS. Brett Bielema. Ron Zook and attach Dantonio all had them ranked #9. Those three along with Lloyd Carr and Joe Tiller were the only ones that had them ranked in the top 12.
- Bobby Bowden either loves his son a lot or his wife fills out his hold as he has Clemson much higher than any other instruct does. He also ranked Oklahoma #10. His son Tommy isn’t much better ranking Missouri over Oklahoma.
- I know I was hard on Hawaii this year but Dennis Franchione had them ranked 22nd. Hal Mumme ranked Hawaii #1.
- Howard Schnellenberger’s vote is a communicate. Kansas #2. Missouri #4. Oklahoma #7 did he miss the last two weeks of the season? He also ranked Florida #21. 6 spots lower than anyone.

Why Bobby Petrino Won't Last at Arkansas

Sat, 15 Dec 2007 14:33:03 -0500

Today the Big East is college football's new hot conference with Cincinnati and USF emerging as powerhouses and change surface UConn and Pitt on the rise.
3. What does it say that Petrino made the act to Arkansas just when he was in prime position to draft Brian Brohm—HIS man—next year?
The Falcons are due for a high compose pick which they could have used to draft Petrino's former Louisville protégé. One compose projection I construe even led with a picture of Petrino and a headline along the lines of "Reunited."
Think about the difference between Florida's team this year and last. It's not Tim Tebow—it's the experience they lost on defense.. hence the Gators' losses.
Petrino ordain run into more go and athleticism on opposing SEC defeses than he ever had on his own "prolific" UL offenses. I'm just not sold on his ability to put up points at Arkansas—especially not right away.
6. The Razaorbaks will (most likely) lose their main offensive weapon next year in Darren McFadden and possibly even Plan B in Felix Jones.
Petrino inherits a re-tooling schedule. Given his bring in record. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes one-and-done in Arkansas—he's always looking for the hot new suitor after all.
According to ESPN columnist Pat Forde the coach has interviewed for new jobs each of the measure five years.. despite assuring his bosses he wouldn't.
All told. Petrino is a big label from a small conference—and I'd call his signing an overhyped lateral move rather than a great pickup.
Without a helluva defensive coordinator who can also recruit. Arkansas ordain remain (at beat) the same team they've been under Houston Nutt: pretty good on offense and mediocre or weak on defense with unremarkable depth and special teams. I'd bet that Petrino never wins the conference championship—change surface IF he sticks around for a few years.
Arkanas generally is pretty strong...... Ive heard populate say they're an average team..... anything but average...... Championship game in Atlanta last year.... dissapointing 8-4 this year but defeat LSU on the road..... nope they're a pretty good team. The media likes four or five teams in the conference due to the markets they draw. With good coaching....... Arkansas has the potential to unseat any of those teams on the field. Arkansas has the most incredible human and financial resources that I can evaluate of and their facilities are Better... yes exceed than anyone elses' in the SEC and possibly the country. If you doubt me on that one..... go act a look! The football stadium has latte bars.. and restaurants as well as the most incredible student bear on youve ever seen. The skyboxes look desire they were designed for a professional stadium. It's worth a be.
All of the success Arkansas had in recent years is due in most move to Houston Nutt recruits Matt Jones and Darren McFadden and neither one of them are gonna be there next year. When he was at Arkansas. Matt Jones won at least 4 games a year by himself. I don't think I need to go into detail what McFadden has done. Petrino has to now prove he can develop players in the college game.
I agree with many of your points and I also conclude that Petrino is not going to set the world on blast in the SEC at least not right away. However he is still a successful college coach and if he were to undergo taken a job in the Big 10. 12 or Pac 10 it would be understood that those conferences should be preparing for an additional strong team.
I've always looked at conference strength as a combination of teams who undergo great coaches players and who have a consistent 4 - 6 teams ranked in the top 25. I've never fallen for the conference with one or two powerhouses and a bunch of.500 squads.
Having said that. I see Petrino coming into the SEC and feeling a little bit like Spurrier and Saban. You experience they can coach but SOMEbody has to lose every game. Next thing you know they've got two handfuls of losses and people are questioning if the game has passed them by.
Next year it looks like Florida and Georgia ordain contend it out at the top of the unify. Winner just might end up in the NC bet.
Let's not crown the Big East just yet alright? Their marquee out of unify wins came early against an Auburn team that was most definitely still finding it's way with a young offensive line and then Oregon State. The Big East is not a joke don't get me wrong it's a very good confrence and not the joke of the BCS leagues either but it's not at the level of the SEC nor ordain it be.
I've read two articles providing BP's side of the story and he doesn't go off as the Simon Legree of college coaches once you take a go back and smoke a few times.
ESPN is infotainment folks. Plain and simple. They report only easy or sensational stories. They didn't change surface bother to dig a little to see why BP would take a 10 million dollar pay cut to get out of Atlanta. Hmmmm...... Interesting wouldn't you accept?
As far as the success or failure is concerned....... Well. HDN ran a schedule that reeked from a lack of integrity and we didn't even have a lot of success on the handle to change intensity the stench. By the way where was ESPN on this one? Oh yeah it would undergo required a little digging on their part so nevermind.
Taking a $10 million pay cut and knowing you were going to be blasted by the national media would seem to be reasons for Petrino to stay in Atlanta. If you listen to his side of the story he was lied to going into the Atlanta situation and was then subjected to a aggroup of thug players and a meddlesome owner who even tried to dictate his actions down to the write of prayers that could be uttered. It's certainly understandable that ESPN and other national media outlets would cater to Arthur keep since his company. domiciliate Depot buys substantial amounts of national advertising. Coach Petrino will just have to let his team's performance in the coming years speak for itself but you just act asking yourself that $10 million question.

Following is the first in a series of posts leading up to Saturday's bet against. From the 2007 Kickoff Preview Edition:Muhlenberg MulesLast playoff appearance: 2004Last year: 5-5. 2-4 CCLast conference title: 2004Wins increase from 05-06: Plus-2Preseason ranking: 108 of 238Head coach: Mike Donnelly. 11th year. 61-44Starters returning: 14 (five offense nine defense zero special teams)Position contend to watch: play. Sophomore Matt Boland (6-foot-2. 220 pounds) appeared in six games last year and was a reliable receiving aim out of the backfield (nine catches. 60 yards. 1 TD). While Boland is the incumbent the Mules have several other young fullbacks - desire junior Bobby Weir and soph Jake Floyd - who could alter the competition interesting. Pressure is on: The secondary. Head coach Mike Donnelly is happy with this unit; all four starters return including all-conference second-teamer Brandon Doyle and Cameron Ahouse an honorable have in mind pick and the Mules were second in the unify in passing defense. But Donnelly wants to see more big plays; he said he saw plenty of pass break-ups measure year but wants to see more turnovers recovered this year. Where did he come from? Senior offensive confront Patrick Calves played in three games last year but makes an even bigger impact off the field by participating with The back up Mile a youth-based program that helps more than 100,000 youngsters across Pennsylvania develop self-esteem and life skills. The back up Mile was founded in 1977 by former Penn express defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Their season will be defined by: The first game a non-conference matchup with TCNJ. Donnelly wants to see his aggroup start the season off quickly; they'll undergo two non-conference games before leading into their Centennial schedule. But the coach quickly adds that circling one bet on the schedule could quickly come about. "We try really hard not to point to one bet," Donnelly said. "because if you do and you happen to lose that what happens to the rest of the toughen?"Predicted record: 5-5. 4-4Capsule: Two seasons ago the Mules were ranked ninth in Division III in be defense; they slipped to 36th in 2006 but should turn higher in 2007. All nine starters return and all-conference-caliber players are approve at every level. Defensive end Chris Musselman was second in the Centennial Conference with 8.5 sacks in 2006 and was voted all-conference; linebackers Dustin Good and Tom Tarsitano both second-team all-conference combined for 122 tackles and 6.5 sacks; bookend corners Brandon Doyle and Cameron Ahouse were all-conference as come up and Ahouse tied for the conference lead with five interceptions. Can the offense keep pace? Half of the starters go including all-conference center Mike Nolan. But continue coach Mike Donnelly has high hopes for his passing game particularly the contribution from the tight ends. Incumbent senior Matt Johnson moved from running back while junior Matt Smith has superb coat (6-foot-6. 250 pounds). Donnelly believes that with this talent the Mules may well change two tight end sets frequently on third down. Junior play Eric Santagato will need a better season for the Mules to succeed however. Though he threw for better than 1,500 yards. Santagato had only five touchdowns against 17 interceptions though he did score nine rushing touchdowns.
