2 PSU players bound for trial on 3 charges after campus fight

BELLEFONTE. Pa. (AP) -Two Penn State players face trial next year on misdemeanor charges stemming from an on-campus fight but more serious charges were dismissed at a preliminary hearing Wednesday. According to the Centre County court administrator's office a judge Wednesday ordered defensive tackle Chris Baker and backup linebacker Navorro Bowman to stand trial on misdemeanor charges of simple assault and disordery conduct as well as a summary violation of harassment and stalking. District Judge Carmine Prestia dismissed one count of felony aggravated assault against each defendant in connection with the early morning fight Oct. 7 during a fraternity party at the student union. One man was treated at the scene after police said he was hit and kicked a number of times on his face and body. Centre County Assistant District Attorney Steve Sloane said he might refile the felony assault charges. Bowman's attorney. Stacy Parks Miller said her client acted in self-defense. Baker's attorney. Karen Muir said she was glad that the most serious charge had been dropped but ``we were hopeful that he would find that Chris wasn't involved at all.'' Baker. 20 of Windsor. Conn. and Bowman. 19 of District Heights. Md. are both still with the Nittany Lions though it's unclear if they play in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 29. Yes there are lots of parents that have raised their kids to love a certain college aggroup but often times those kids grow up and become loyal to their own alma mater. No matter where they move or where they go to school they'll still be able to come home to root for their NFL team. Everyone gets a team -There are numerous states in the Deep South and Great Plains where dozens of large communities lack professional teams. Pro franchises are hundreds of miles apart from each other. College football gives these people and the entire state something to cheer for which is extra special when pro teams are few and far between. In places like Alabama. Mississippi and Nebraska college football is more than a past time.. because it has to be. Very good point. College wins that one. On the other hand some of those Mississippians and Arkansans are still hard core NFL fans regardless of distance. Every game counts v. 1-3 team coming back to make playoffs to make playoffs -In college football there is no room for error. One loss and you can kiss your BCS chances goodbye. If you schedule all cupcakes in your pre-conference (like Kansas St and Minnesota usually do) in order to stock up on wins the computer will alter sure you're left out of the big party later. Every game is a playoff game and no matter what the scenario is you always undergo to as Larry the Cable Guy would say "get-r-done." I'm sure someone out there has an explanation for why a team with two losses is good enough to play for the national championship yet a team that hasn't been beaten by anybody doesn't have that same alter. But that explanation would hold out logic. Based on the simple principles of athletics it is simply impossible to explain how a team could finish a toughen undefeated -- the ONLY aggroup to be undefeated in its particular feature -- and not even participate in that feature's championship game. But since the BCS and college football do not adhere to logic it is time for Hawaii to fight fire with fire.
