The college and high school football seasons are winding down and that means recruiting is picking back up. And Sunday night Penn State took another step in filling out this years class when Cardinal O'Hare tight end Mark Wedderburn over offers from Rutgers. Michigan. Florida. Tennessee and Louisville among others. Mark's older brother Floyd played for Joe Paterno back in the 1990's. After a successful career as an offensive tackle Floyd was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks where he played three seasons. Although Mark played out the recruiting process for a long time there was never really any doubt where he was going to go to school. "Penn State caught my heart," Wedderburn said. "When Floyd was playing up there. I loved everything about the program. It was a real-deal kind of family. "I was still young [8 years old when Floyd was a senior] but I have a whole lot of memories. From watching the games and being around the players to going to JoePa's house and eating his wife's chocolate chip cookies. They were the best. "When coach Vanderlinden came to my house. I knew. I just knew. All the other schools had good people good programs. I just said. 'The heck with this. Time to end [the recruiting process].' I knew Penn State was it for me." Wedderburn canceled visits to Rutgers. Tennessee. Florida and Louisville. "I wanted to stay close to home for my family's sake," he said. "No need for hopping on a plane to Tennessee. Florida. I remember how much family fun we had on those trips to Penn State." I projected one tight end commitment in this class and Mark is it. I think Joe knew Mark would end up at Penn State because we never really recruited another tight end. A few years ago we were depleted at tight end. Now we have an impressive stable that includes Andrew Quarless. Mickey Shuler. Andrew Szczerba possibly Jon Ditto and now Wedderburn. The 6'5" 235 tight end has had an impressive senior season leading his team to the Catholic Red semi-finals with 26 catches for 386 yards and a touchdown. Mark also lines up at defensive end and plays on his high school basketball team. He's rated as a three star prospect by both of the recruiting services. to see a local athlete staying home. If people only did this alot more in sports some of the teams on eastern pa wouldn't be a laughing stock(Temple) lol. I read he's grown two inches since last summer. If he is 6'7" then Penn State may look at him as an offensive tackle. He'll have to put on a good 50-60 lbs to go that route.

"If Byrne says Sherman is the man then Sherman is the man." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-09-25 01:39:16

He was also in charge of personnel and the Packers had some bad drafts. But the guy can coach. There's just no question about that. He's also smart enough to organize the recruiting process. NFL coaches generally are a cut above college coaches. Many of them understand the importance of a first-class strength-training program and how to run an efficient practice. The strength-training move of it is huge. This is something Mack Brown seemingly has never understood. Sherman will also direct players accountable. He'll be tough when he needs to be tough but he won't choose fights the way so many college coaches do. If Bill Byrne says Mike Sherman is the right guy that's good enough for me. Bill Byrne's track record for hiring coaches is pretty good. I also know Mike Sherman. I experience that he's smart tough and organized. He's got a decency about him that Aggies will come to appreciate. This is the beat time of the year to be a college football fan. In Austin they want Mack gone. I've actually had emails saying Mack Brown has failed to meet the standards of Texas football. Uh whatever standards Texas football has were established by Mack cook. If fans aren't happy with Mack Brown they won't be happy with anyone. Anyway congratulations. Aggies. This is a good day. Too bad you don't know it yet. This Aggie grad knows we got a good one RJ. I knew him a little bit when he was at A&M previously. I know how much he was respected by everyone. & he truly loves Aggieland too. Very fair & decent man extremely bright. & who by the way can flat coach too. Strong on fundamentals & never a doubt who is in charge. He got a raw deal in Green Bay. Yes. I experience some Ags are disappointed with the hire but that goes with the territory too. They will love him when he wins & does things the alter way. Hiring a quality cater is key - esp guys who can sell the product & recruit big-time athletes who can run & make plays again. I have beat faith in Sherm & he has been my choice all along. Tuberville would have been fine too but those 2 guys were my "choices" in any request. Byrne knows what he is doing as the whole athletic program is full of promise now & doing well. Gig 'em & here's to the bright future of Aggie football. RJ if you were referring to Aggiecoach dot com then you must know he does not speak for me (and I suspect he does not represent the views of the majority of former and current A&M students.) I am excited about this hire. Can't wait to see how it pans out. [That's who I'm referring to and he did it again this morning. He wrote that Sherman needs to quit the Texans and devote himself to A&M 100 percent. I honestly think this guy just starts typing and has no idea what comes out. I'd like to hear Mike Sherman tell Gary Kubiak that news. ''I'm outta here. Gary. I know you helped me get the job. I experience this is the most important part of your season. But I have to take care of me.''--Richard] I was on the Aggie football team from 1994 to 1998. There is no question in my object that Sherman is a good coach. He is not a people person. If you are not one of his "guys" then you did not exist. He is by far the best offensive line coach I have seen but everyone hated his guts. Tuberville in my oppinion was the exceed fit for the job. He is also a very good coach. He has one of the best defensive minds I undergo ever been around. He is also a players coach. He can go into the ghetto of north Dallas as well as the suburbs and register equally come up. He will get you the players. If you guys don't know it A&M has been blacklisted by the urban dallas schools since the probation thing. It's common knowledge by the players. They are all in Normon. Anyway. I hope it works out for the best and I hope the Aggies have found there man. It's time to get back to the natural order of things. Go Aggies!!!!!!1 As a life-long UT fan. I wouldn't want anyone else but Mack cook coaching on 40 acres. Does he need to fire some people? You bet. Akina see ya. Greg Davis. I don't know how you stuck around this long. But. Mack will always make sure UT remains an elite program in college football. With parity at its highest this season. I'm OK with that. What I'm not OK with is the embarrassingly poor performances on the field during three losses. That's where the assistant coach changes need to be made. act the head coach though. I would have preferred an up and coming assistant from a top program who has pedigree under a great coach. Having said that. Sherman has coached under Holmgren and many of his assistants have gone on to be successful. As you said in a previous article. I think the key concept Fran failed at was assistants so I think some Aggie fans are equally interested in who our new assistants will be and how soon can they get into recruit's living rooms. My change posture: Byrne looked at the Big 12 landscape and saw what he had to compete against. Even if the Aggies were to hire as good a politican as Brown and as good an overall coach as Stoops the program still may play 3rd fiddle in the South Division. He needed a fresh angle something those guys couldn't offer. Hopefully the NFL experience Sherman (and a couple of Texans assistants) brings to the table gives the Ags that fresh angle. Ok big challenge. For the next 5 games where will Sherman's priorities be. How can he do everything that a new head coach needs to do and still prepare a game plan for the Texans? The Texans might as well channel him now so he can concentrate on his new duties. regenerate him with a interim and go forward. After yesterday's game. I am not sure if it will make much difference. The game plan as come up as the execution stunk. [I know the guy and his loyalty will be with Gary Kubiak. He's one of those guys that pours himself into the task at hand and I would bet everything I own the Texans will get his best effort. He's just that kind of person. What do you mean interim? You mean go on the Internet and look for someone? Come on son no one can come in at this point and do the job he has been doing. That said it's a tough tough situation. There's no easy answer. But he's not walking out on Gary.--Richard] I don't have a stake in this but if Sherman will finish the season with the Texans anyway then why couldn't the Aggies do their due diligence and interview other top candidates before settling with Sherman? The same Mike Sherman whose "offensive creativity" has worked "wonders" for the Texans? It just appears to me that they wanted an Aggie or someone with a past link to the schedule more so than the beat possible coach. I guess Fran being an outsider didn't work out so they had to go in the total opposite direction. Now if Sherman fails. Aggies can still accuse Fran for leading them in that direction. Ther are at least two things I think Sherman will need to do:1. include the A&M grow. Dennis Franchione did not and the fans did not like him. If fans dislike a coach it inevitably puts more pressure on that coach. Jackie Sherrill embraced the A&M culture and although he was not very successful at A&M his first three years he was still a likable individual to the students.2. Take chances. Franchione's best games (wins or losses) were those in which he was not afraid to take a few chances. Notice Bob Stoops and Pete Carroll. They take lots of chances and they've been successful coaches. Plus it makes games more exciting. Too often Fran's gameplans were so conservative and boring that I thought I was watching a bad NFL team. Sherman has a good NFL experience and let's face it. Most kids who play college ball are hopin to use their college undergo as a stepping stone to the pros. If Sherman has NFL experience that can be a worm to dangle for recruiting. Tom King over at Aggiecoach speaks for one person - Tom King. His website is an abomination and is usually littered with gross inaccuracies and falsehoods. He has promoted himself to national newspapers as a voice of the Aggie fan base (I sent an email to an Alabama writer a few weeks ago who was quoting Aggiecoach. The writer told me that King was actively promoting himself as the mouthpiece of Aggies everywhere - not the case.) This is a good week for Aggies everywhere. We beat tu. Aggie hoops is on the rise and we have a good new coach. If Kubiak and Bill Byrne say he's the man then I trust 'em. Gig 'em Coach Sherman. Welcome back. If he can judge high school talent better than he could college talent he has a chance at A&M. By all accounts he is an excellent teacher and from what I saw in GB a pretty good game coach. UT Alum here. Get fed up hearing Texas fans whine about Mack cook and the program. After 2005 national championship did these fans really think we were going to win every bet we played? College football is based on recruiting classes and if you followed Texas' recruiting over the last few years we are right where we should be. Most teams are going to go as far as their juniors and seniors can take them and Texas' 2004/2005 classes were subpar at best. On the other hand our 2006/2007 classes were sick and will show over the next two years with 2009 really being our best shot for a call. Justice is completely right in saying Mack Brown brought these standards to Texas. Before you think other coaches are far superior to Mack look at Pete Carroll's recruiting classes over the last few years and then you might realize a serious argument can be made that he's underachieved the last two years. I agree with you ten-fold. Sherman is the right choice for Texas A&M. As a recent A&M grad I was forced to endure 4 years of Aggie football that caused me to age grow grey hair and then tear out the grey hair. A&M football became boring; every other play was read option and other teams' defenses knew it. Also unlike Fran. Sherman is a adjust team player taking a $200,000 paycut so that he has more money to hire the best assistant coaches possible which should be an entire new staff. Sherman knows what it means to be an Aggie and how important football is to the school. He is passionate and will actually show emotion unlike coach VIP-connection who would check his team get 3 penalties in a row and not even crack a frown. Texas A&M is a place of reputation and passion and alot of that is displayed at Kyle Field during football season and there is no doubt in my mind that Sherman will be able to awake the sleeping giant that is A&M football. Thanks and Gig'Em RJ. What is wrong with Texas. Mack is not the problem he brings all the talent in and can manage the bet but Davis and Akina seem to not know thier players talents and alter thier sides of the roll. What gives? [I be with you on Greg Davis. Look at the points they've scored. They haven't done a good job of protecting the ball but I think Greg Davis is good at what he does. I'm told this has been a real challenging year internally. Jamal Charles and Colt McCoy have been great at times not so good at others. I don't think that's because Greg coached great one week and badly the next.--Richard] I'm a UT fan and I still hope the Sherman contract is a good one for A & M. If so it will be good for Texas football and the Big 12. As for Mack he's the best thing for UT football in a long time. His weakness is that he is very loyal to his coaches and to his players. The Greg Davis statistics point to him as a good coach and just the opposite for Akina. Mack also plays his seniors even though some better players are behind them. Of course no one leaves early object for Vince. There is some good and bad in all things. I personally evaluate it would be best for A&M and the Texans if Sherman moved on - like tomorrow. Every impact he has seems to have had on the Texans appears to be negative (player preference affect on the offense etc..). The only positive he seemed to have on the Texans is being in the Kubiak inner circle which apparently made Kubiak feel good but has not translated to results on the field. He does seem like a high quality individual (personal ethics family oriented high values etc.) so I hope him the best at A&M. I like your articles and I love your radio show. I think you have great insight. However. I'm scared that Sherman gets your vote of confidence because you loved Fran so much that I started to believe that Fran was the man that you were right.. that he had his teams were always well prepared. personally i think the worst thing that happened to our program was the win against texas last year.. that only kept Fran around another year.... [I have no idea whether Mike Sherman is going to succeed or not and neither does anyone else. His credentials certainly aren't better than Fran's. I'm still not sure what happened with Fran. That style of play and that game plan you saw last Friday is the Fran I thought A&M was getting. Here's what I know about Mike Sherman. He can coach. Period. He did a terrific job at Green Bay. He didn't do such a terrific job in terms of personnel but that's less complicated at the college level. A&M is located within 200 miles of every player the program will ever need. Basically. Sherman needs four things. He needs a great strength coach. I'm told that is already in place. He also needs a great recruiting coordinator. I've heard one is on the way. And he needs great offensive and defensive coordinators. I have no idea who Mike has in mind for those jobs. Mike made some mistakes in Green Bay and I'm betting he has learned from those mistakes. I think his personality will wear well with fans and on recruits. I don't experience if he'll succeed but I do know the guy and believe in him. That's the beat I can do. Yes. I thought Fran would succeed too.--Richard] Darryl Royal established Texas football standards not Mack Brown. He is the standard all other University of Texas football coaches are measured against. That's how you measure intangibles. [That's true but the schedule declined in the 22 years between the time Darrell coached his last game and Mack his first. Texas was in a state of disrepair. Mack has made the program stronger than ever if you count fan support etc. as part of the equation. This program is Mack's from start to finish now. I look forward to the day he leaves and here all the insufferable UT fans get someone that will satisfy them. That person doesn't exist but it'll be fun watching them complain about the new guy.--Richard] Fred S. Art Briles is not young and up and coming. In fact he is only one year younger than Mike Sherman. While I thought Petersen would have been a slightly exceed fit for the young up and coming coach. Mike Sherman is still a hell of a coach. He ran into the same problems Pete Carroll did in the NFL. Great coach who fell under the weight of having to be the GM as come up. Once both coaches lost their jobs for the sake of a new GM wanting to make a change both inexplicably never found other NFL continue coaching jobs depite the likes of Norv Turner getting another chance. Pete took an underachieveing USC and brought it back to past glory. I think Sherman can do the same and get A&M back into the top ten. Give him a chance. Richard Justice says " ... Uh whatever standards Texas football has were established by Mack Brown. ..."R. J. I've seldom had reason to disagree with you but I do here. I've nothing against Mack Brown although I do wonder if he might should put more emphases on players' character. That said he didn't set the standards for UT football. That title belongs to. --- I see you address this in SDA's post. I'm glad Mike Sherman was chosen as A&M's new coach. He brings a lot to the table that's been missing. I'm wondering what his list of assistants will be desire? They'll probably turn some heads. At least RC is firmly in his corner. In-state recruiting competition is not what it was 20-30 years ago - money not withstanding. Texas high school players that formally might undergo gone to Arkansas. Houston. SMU. TCU and even Rice now go to Texas because of those school's memberships in other conferences. (However. I will agree that out of state competition is much greater today which partially offsets this point.) Mack was known as a great recruiter at North Carolina and still is considered one today. However he has reaped a tangible benefit from Texas' strategic decision to form the Big 12. With that said there are many areas that he can rightfully be criticized that seem to hold for all of his teams except the 2005 edition. Texas fans are not complaining without cerebrate. 1)The players don't improve as they mature. (Chris Simms. Jamaal Charles)2)The better player doesn't always start (This year's LB core)3)The team plays soft in big games (2-6 against Bob Stoops)4)The scheme doesn't always fit the players ability (Colt McCoy in Vince's Offense) As I wrote in a reponse to the hiring bind.. what is with this 'He gets Aggieland'. You could hire the biggest Aggie homer on the planet who bleeds maroon sleeps in maroon pjs and has Gig Em' tatooed on his back.. if that guy goes 6-6 7-5. 7-5. 8-4 and 7-5 over the next few years then.. hey. its ok. cause he understands Aggieland. I am not an Aggie and I could compassionate less if my coach wore burnt orange to a press conference.. if the guy wins. he wins not because he understands the idiosyncrasies of being an aggie but because he can coach. Please stop with this Aggie home stuff. It was 1976 and I remember it too well. OU came back to tie us 6-all luckily they missed the extra point or it would undergo been 6 or 7 in a row over Texas atm beat us for the second straight year(27-3 if memory serves) in Austin. We finished the year 5-5-1 with a victory over Arkansas and also if memory serves the final game for both Darrell Royal and Frank Broyles of Arkansas. RJ you can take this to the bank: you can take all the negative atm energy and all the anti-Mack cook energy that's been in this blog-space & add it together and that was the groundswell developing against Darrell Royal at that time. That's how we got Fred Akers. Texas did some great things under DKR but they did great things under Mack Brown too. Notable victories over Michigan. Ohio State and USC stand taller in my mind than the old Cotton roll days of the SWC when you could sign 70 recruits a year. Hook 'Em. [Art Briles wants to leave UH. That's the only conclusion I can displace. He had conversations with Minnesota and Iowa State last year. I've been told it wasn't just the school seeking him out either. Now he wanted to interview with Baylor. It can't be about the money. If it's about the money he tells Dave Maggard. ''It's going to take $1.5 million to keep me.'' It goes beyond that. Wish him come up. I would also suggest you have faith in Dave. He hired Art. He'll find another competent coach.--Richard] [If Goose Gossage doesn't get in it would be a crime. I'm voting for Lee Smith and Jack Morris too but I'm not sure either is going to make it. Tim Raines probably is the best of the first-time eligibles. I'm guessing the overhauled veterans committee will put someone in most likely Marvin Miller. It would be a compel if he doesn't get in. Whitey Herzog. Dick Williams and Buzzie Bavasi could all get in.--Richard

"What use to be Notre Dame football." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 14:33:55

One thing you could almost always ascertain on every college football toughen was a very competitive Notre Dame football team not so anymore. Notre Dame is currently 1-9 with the humiliating lopsided losses piling up. Whos’s to blame? You could be at the very tough schedule since they belong to no conference they can play any aggroup they want. What team can afford not to if asked by play Notre Dame it’s a big payday for the school and you get national exposure. You can say the academic standards are holding the team back with restrictions on admittance to the school. This definitely has affected the aggroup but on the other hand Notre Dame has had one of the highest graduation rates in college football over the measure 20-25 years and had successful teams. Another calculate is Notre Dame was and comfort is the only aggroup with a national television assure but the fact of the be is that most college teams are on television now. The allure of being the only program that was on television every week is gone. The single most important factor is the head instruct Charlie Weis who is in charge of teaching and leading these young men. He has failed miserably not only was he hailed as a savior and breath of fresh air for the schedule. He having won two Super Bowls as offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots he was thought to be an ‘offensive genius’ his offense this year is anemic to put it mildly. The productive offenses he has had where with players he did not register while at Notre Dame. He has had two top ten recruiting classes in his three years and yet his teams are devoid of go and athleticism. He then rubs populate and his players the wrong way with his arrogance and aloofness. He needs to go period. Notre Dame has set the precedent for firing coaches after three years with Ty Willingham so there is no forgive for not firing Weis. They undergo comparable win/loss records both haven’t won bowl games but Willingham was loved by his players and widely respected as a coach and person. Weis only as a instruct in the NFL. The major problem I have is Weis is trying to run the schedule how they ran things in New England that doesn’t bring home the bacon with young men. They need to be built up and a family environment needs to be created not some type of environmrnt where you have a guy coming off like someone who thinks he knows everything and doesn’t experience why players he coaches don’t get it. Notre Dame isn’t without some accuse as well they gave Charlie Weis a ten year contract after two years this is completely unheard of worth around 3-4 million annually. So now Notre Dame is on the hook for his contract so a buyout is financial insanity so he won’t be fired but he definitely should be. bequeath Notre Dame you did this to yourselves. I personally agree considering how eliquetly this had been presented to me. The Notre Dame is a great university wih great expectations! But how great can you be when you put high priced coaches greed and lack of integrity first instead keeping a instruct that embodied whats good in college sports-Ty Willingham. So ND ordain undergo to keep a coach that the alumni dont care for but maybe Regis and his friend might buy out Weis contract? "5 BOLD Predictions for the 2007 College Football Season" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 13:09:27

It's Game Day. change surface if your team doesn't play tonight you undergo to be pumped. LSU vs Mississippi express works for me. It could be Buffalo vs Temple and I'd be on the edge of my seat. This also marks the measure day for prognostications (thankfully). From here on out we'll actually have something objective to evaluate. That said it's also your last opportunity to tell us you told us so go December. Isn't that what this is all about? Don't shy away like the "experts," and let's hear you bold predictions for this season. We'll change surface up with this post and fasten it in our approve take until December. Here are 5 predictions I undergo that I don't think will be all that popular. Notre Dame starts out 1-7 Yes. 1 win 7 losses. Safe to say Lou Holtz and I have differing opinions on the Irish this season. Lou sees 10+ wins. Notre Dame will undergo to rely more on the running game this season at least until Jimmy Clausen morphs into Joe Montana and the offensive line is a downgrade from measure year. Skill positions are all downgraded. I can't sight more than 1 win against Georgia Tech. Penn State. Michigan. Michigan State. Purdue. UCLA and Boston College. No bowl for St. FUPA. Rutgers takes a step or three back 8-4 for Greg Schiano this year. Not entirely a flash in the pan. Greg is a tremendous instruct but the Scarlet Knights had the roll bound their way more than a few times measure year. That's football. West Virginia and Louisville and definite L's. South Florida and Maryland will also "surprise," and I would keep an eye out for Cincinnati as well. Georgia Tech wins the ACC with the best defense in the country. If only Calvin Johnson had Taylor Bennett at quarterback he might have really done some damage to the preserve books. Bennett isn't anything special but he's an grade yes from Reggie Ball. In the competitive ACC. Jon Tenuda's D ordain keep the Yellow Jackets consistent all toughen. Biggest disturb of the year: Kentucky over Florida Andre' Woodson is going to win the Wildcats a bet they have no business winning on cover. This is the one. (One more disturb pick: Michigan State over Michigan. Seriously.)Wisconsin wins Big Ten. Loses in Title bet to LSU Maybe not the boldest but I get the impression a lot of you aren't buying the Badgers. Why is that? You can't name more than 2 players on the aggroup. Just like Bo Ryan's basketball team the games aren't pretty. There's no flash no Wild hog formation no #1 recruiting classes but they get it done with minimal mistakes. measure to sack up yourself. This is your last chance to go on the preserve. We'll file this thread away and return in early December. South Carolina ordain go 6-2 in the SEC and win the SEC East and approach LSU in Atlanta for the SEC Championship on Dec. 1st where they will fall to the Tigers for the 2nd measure. The country ordain officially experience Spurrier is approve after this season. If UL goes undefeated (Im not taking anything from measure night's bet) they ordain be among the top 2 in the BCS. Don't you think? I'd be surprised to see two other teams go undefeated but if they do then your prediction will be dead on. If UL goes undefeated (Im not taking anything from last night's bet) they will be among the top 2 in the BCS. Don't you think? I'd be surprised to see two other teams go undefeated but if they do then your prediction will be dead on. Really? I didn't really get that feeling from watching that game. I was impressed for sure that they went on the road in the SEC & won 45-0 but they didn't look unbeatable to me. I'm going to use CF's argument here.. they just didn't be to show anything and ran extremely vanilla defensive schemes and offensive plays. I think Les Miles is their biggest weakness. Either way. I can't wait for this season to start.. its going to be a great toughen. Yeah. I don't evaluate I overlooked anything! I anticipate we'll see in the desire run. I don't care what they didn't run what they did run didn't look all that impressive. & they were playing with a short handle for the entire first half against a mediocre team & had to get a late TD to go up 17-0. Six interceptions by the MSU QB.
