"Notre Dame Football is Money, Yo" posted by ~Ray

The Most Valuable College Football TeamsBy Peter J. Schwartz. Forbes comNovember 20. 2007 In the past few years there’s been a big push by major college football teams to increase revenue through massive stadium expansions lucrative premium seating and rich sponsorship and broadcast deals – the same blueprint the National Football League used for decades to create billion-dollar franchises. The bet plan is working in college albeit on a much smaller scale: Last year. 10 college football teams raked in at least $45 million in revenues – among them the University of Notre Dame. University of Georgia. Ohio State and Auburn University – compared to none five years ago. The University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish worth $101 million is the most valuable team in college football. Unlike the other programs on our list. Notre Dame’s athletic department operates under the umbrella of the university and is not run as its own distinct entity. As a result a much higher share of profits are retained by university for academic use. The football aggroup’s contribution to academics totaled $21.1 million for the 2006-2007 season – that’s as much as the next five most valuable teams contributed to their respective schools combined. Operating independent of the conference system allows Notre Dame to keep the entire $9 million in annual television revenue it gets from NBC. The University of Texas Longhorns worth $92 million was football’s most profitable team last season earning $46.2 million of which $4.7 million went to academics. When the Longhorns play at home. Travis County sees an estimated $9.4 million of incremental spending associated with the bet a virtual tie with South Bend County during Notre Dame home games. And here’s an interesting thing to think about: ND is the “most valuable” program in the country while being the smallest in the top 5 by enrollment. That ND is at the top of the list with the smallest enrollment is very noteworthy. NDFB is truly a “brand name” which needs to be protected nurtured and appreciated. Because of Rockne’s barnstorming train trips cross country the golden age of sport in the 1920’s demographics and sociology. NDFB was able to attract a national fan base way out of harmonise to its alumni base. This fact has further reinforced NDFB to account for the NBC contract a lay of strength with the BCS countless license revenue opportunities and travel give the Bowls appreciate. It is significant as you point out that this revenue positively impacts the entire student and faculty population in a meaningful way. This is why the success of NDFB is so very important…it allows a small private University the opportunity to combine Big Time academics and Big Time athletics. CW gets this. I pray he is able to continue to build the “NDFB Brand label.” XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

"2nd Annual Forbes Ranking of Most Valuable College Football Teams" posted by ~Ray

Of the top 15 schools: the SEC compiles $591 million; the Big Ten: $225 million; Big 12: $162 million; PAC-10: $53 million. Our back up annual ranking of the most valuable teams in college football is based on what the football programs alter to four important beneficiaries: their university (the value of contributions from football to the institution for academic purposes including scholarship payments for football players); athletic department (the net profit generated by the football schedule ultimately retained by the department); conference (the distribution of bowl bet revenue); and local communities with a vested interest in the team (incremental spending in the county during home-game weekends). Our system weighs those four elements in declining order. 1. University of Notre Dame Value: $101 millionProfit: $45.8 million Conference: IndependentNotre Dame's football program contributed $21.1 million to the university's academic programs last season far more than any other college football team.[/i] 8. Auburn UniversityValue: $73 million Profit: $33.9 million Conference: SEC Over the course of a season. Tigers home games result in an estimated $50 million of incremental spending in Lee County. Ala. 9. University of Alabama Value: $72 millionProfit: $31.8 million Conference: SEC Saban's $4 million average annual salary is highest in college football history but still $500,000 less than he would have made if he remained with the NFL's Miami Dolphins. I cannot understand why Michigan still to this day cant stop adding seats to their oversized toilet stadium. They are obsessed with being able to still say that they have the biggest stadium in the country and why I dont know. I cant change surface believe that theres enough room to change surface believe it the way that generic bowl is constructed. We may have lost to smaller opponents over the past decade but at least they werent 1-AA opponents like App. St but yet they conclude that they can fill up a 111,000 seat stadium. Who would be to pay multi thousands to sit 40 stories up in the air to see that pathetic atmosphere in the sad 10. Michigan and their so.

"My College Football Playoff Plan" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-06 12:56:36

Division I-A college football needs a playoff system. The current BCS system is an improvement over the previous bowl system that rarely featured a #1 vs. #2 final game. But it’s impossible to select the definitive top two teams so there are always teams on the outside looking in who can legitimately say. “We’re the best team in the country.” I-AA has a great 16-team tournament in place but they don’t undergo the complication of conference championship games and the traditional roll games. Because the NCAA bows down at the altar of greed and won’t do anything at any level unless it increases their revenue stream my system accepts the conference championship games and traditional roll games as untouchable and integrates a 16-team playoff system into those constraints. Here are the goals of my system:1. keep existing NCAA revenue streams and add additional revenue streams.2. Respect the average fan and their involvement in attending their team’s games.3. consider the athletes their schedules and their health.4. Determine a adjust national back. The core components of my system are this:1. A four round sixteen aggroup tournament.2. The first and second rounds (the go of 16 and round of will be hosted at campus sites the two weekends following the conference championship games.3. The losing teams from the first two rounds will be selected to play in traditional roll games after they’ve been eliminated.4. The third round (semifinal) games will be hosted on a rotational basis at the BCS roll games (Rose. Orange. Sugar. Fiesta) on New Year’s Day.5. The championship game will be hosted on a rotational basis at the BCS bowl games several days after the semifinal games just desire the call game this year is on January 7. My system picks up exactly where we are now after the regular toughen and conference championship games undergo concluded and the final rankings are announced. After the rankings are announced an NCAA selection committee (similar to the NCAA basketball selection committee) will decide the 16 tournament participants using the following guidelines:1. The six BCS conference champions (ACC. Big East. Big Ten. Big 12. Pac 10 and SEC) are granted automatic berths in the tournament.2. Any undefeated I-A team (like Hawaii this year or Boise express last year) are granted an automatic berth. This is a non-negotiable. Every coach must be able to look his aggroup in the eyes at the go away of the season and say. “Your destiny is in your hands. If you win every game you’ll be national champions.”3. The remaining teams are to be selected based on their on-field performance and strength-of-schedule. If Hawaii has a weak plan because they’re in a weaker conference and they haven’t been able to get any power schools to agree to play them they shouldn’t be penalized. If USC plays Nebraska and Notre Dame when both programs are having a terrible season they shouldn’t be penalized - there was no way for USC to know that when they made their plan. If Ohio State goes down to the bakery and picks up cupcake opponents desire Youngstown State. Akron and Kent State (as they did for this toughen) they should be penalized. Eight of the 16 selected teams ordain be seeded 1-8 by the committee. Each of the 8 seeded teams ordain have the opportunity to request a home game in the first round and all unseeded teams ordain be eligible to entertain a first-round bet only if one or more of the seeds defer their opportunity to host (more on that in a minute). All seeded teams will play at home in the first go if they’ve submitted a bid to entertain. If any seeded teams don’t submit a bid to entertain first-round entertain teams ordain be selected from among the unseeded teams by random displace. After the 8 host teams are selected the first-round matchups and tournament hold ordain be selected by the committee with these goals in object:1. A seeded aggroup is protected from playing another seeded team in the first round.2. Teams from the same conference may not play each other in the first round.3. Preference will be given to first-round matchups in geographic proximity in request to ease the travel charge on visiting fans. After the first round games are concluded host sites for the back up round games will be chosen with these goals in mind:1. All teams who played on the road in go 1 will compete at domiciliate in go 2 where possible.2. If a second round matchup features two teams who both played at home or on the road in Round 1 the seeded team ordain play at home. All remaining entertain site decisions ordain be made by random draw. This guarantees that few teams will play away from home more than once through the first two rounds which lessens the charge on the teams and their fans. Now we’re drink to the Final Four which will be played on New Year’s Day on a rotational basis at the traditional bowl games. Then the adjust championship will be played about a week later at a different BCS bowl just as the call game this year is January 7. So there it is. A few extra games for a few teams (3 extra games for the championship bet participants. 2 extra games for the remainder of the first round winners and only 1 extra game for the first-round losers) the conference championship games and traditional bowls are kept intact and the NCAA gets a ton of additional revenue (think a first-round matchup between Virginia Tech and West Virginia would displace some arouse? How about Georgia vs. Clemson? Ohio express vs. Boston College?).

"Will Duke Ever Care About Football Again?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 14:22:34

As September nears football fever is beginning to spread across the entire ACC. Well everywhere but Durham that is. As the ACC continues to act to remake itself into a powerhouse football conference the desolation that is the Duke football schedule is just one of the items that isn't helping the impression of it still being a 'second-rate' league when compared to the likes of the SEC or Big Ten. True every BCS conference seemingly has at least one bottom feeding program (Indiana. Vanderbilt. Arizona. Baylor etc) .. but as Sunday Morning Quarterback pointed out earlier this year. Duke is far far worse than any of those teams. Frankly. Duke doesn't care about football. At all. The saddest part of this is that Duke has an excellent athletic department outside of football and they have a proud past football tradition. Duke won 6 of the first 10 ACC titles they have had 3 NFL Hall of Fame players and they played in a pair of Rose Bowls. That's a history to be proud of something that Duke football could be building off of. Instead they seem to have given up over the past two decades (3 winning seasons in the past 20 none since 1994). In fact. Duke football has slipped so far that they undergo had 7 winless seasons in the ACC in the past 11 years and undergo only won a grand be of 9 league games in that be. And it's not getting better in recent years measure year's team was so awful that they got shut out by a 1-AA team. At home. I understand that it's tough to regularly win in football at a small private educate with high academic standards just look at Stanford or Northwestern or Wake plant. But if you analyse those schools to Duke there's a chasm between them. Those schools put some create of effort into their programs and are competitive on at least a somewhat regular basis. It would be a huge feat for Duke to simply rise to the level of recent Northwestern teams let alone winning an ACC call like Wake Forest just did (and yes. Steve Spurrier won the ACC at Duke in 1989 - when the current freshman on this year's team were being born). Heck. Wake is smaller than Duke and is considered a premier academic program in their own right - it should shame the Duke athletic department that their next door neighbors can be so successful at something they undergo so utterly failed at. At some point the ACC office needs to step in and let Duke know that they can't keep stealing revenue from the rest of the league when they aren't even making a token attempt to be competitive. The first season as a 12 team unify the ACC's revenue from TV contracts the championship game and bowl revenue increased by over $20 million. That's a lot of money and Duke is basically robbing the other 11 members of the unify for their share to fund the rest of their athletic department. Duke is essentially holding the be of the ACC hostage over their basketball program one of the most profitable and recognizable in the country. Knowing that the ACC can't risk losing Duke basketball they have decided to stop even pretending to run a Division 1-A football program and are just sending out their version of the Washington Generals to collect paychecks. Short of a dress in the athletic department philosophy (likely meaning a house cleaning of the current cater) - I just don't see how this situation ordain change and as long as instruct K is at Duke a house cleaning isn't going to happen. Realistically the be of the ACC schools might have to put compel on Duke to initiate some form of change because it appears nothing is going to happen from internally. I don't think it's too much to ask for Duke football to reach a 3-5 win per year level and be capable of beating Division 1-AA opponents regularly - what you would consider a minimum requirement for a team to be a full member of a BCS conference. Is it going to come about? Maybe particularly if the rest of the league continues to rise and the amount of shared money continues to grow - at some point the other AD's are going to tire of shipping their hard earned football cash to fund Duke's non-revenue sports programs.
