"State tournaments begin today with four in IF" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-03 09:10:50

Two months of work comes down to two days of action as eastern Idaho teams take on the rest of the state in the Idaho High School Volleyball State Championships beginning today at the four high schools in Idaho Falls. The state’s 5A schools will set up shop at Hillcrest High School with Idaho Falls representing District 6. The 4A schools play at Skyline and the area will be represented by Rigby and defending-champion Bonneville. Sugar-Salem leads the field in 3A which will be at Bonneville High School. And Firth and West Jefferson make up two of the eight teams in 2A which will be played at Idaho Falls High School. The state’s smallest schools head south to play for their titles with Challis competing in 1A Division I at Kimberly High School and Mackay battling it out in 1A Division II at Burley High School. Quick dig: For the ninth time in as many years coaching at Idaho Falls. Wendy Johnson is back at the 5A state tournament and looking for her fourth state championship. “Scrappy” is the word opposing coaches keep using to describe the Tigers. That’s just fine with Johnson. “That’s a huge compliment,” Johnson said. “Everybody knows our front row’s not the tallest. We have to be aggressive in the back row. After the ball gets past our blockers it becomes the back row’s responsibility to get it. Scrappy means we get to it.” Despite relying on defense more than power. Idaho Falls has dominated running the table except for three losses to Bonneville and two to Highland. Johnson said Coeur d’Alene (27-3) is the 5A dark horse because few teams have played it. Eagle the defending champion is the favorite. But don’t count out Idaho Falls. With five seniors and six juniors the Tigers are a veteran bunch. Quick dig: Bonneville has to be considered the 4A favorite. The defending champion Bees are 36-1 with only a narrow loss to Alta. Utah blemishing their record. Sandpoint which Bonneville beat in the championship last year will also be a force but happens to be on the opposing side of the bracket. With only two seniors. Bonneville is a young team. However. Mailie Garner leads a bumper crop of juniors. A starter since her freshman season. Garner racked up 43 kills in two matches on championship Saturday last year. Bonneville got a boost when Kylee Searle also a junior transferred from Shelley to man the other outside hitter spot. With equal threats on the outside. 6-foot-2 middle blocker Bryndy Anderson supplying height and power in the middle and a strong back line. Bonneville is skilled all over the court. The Bees’ service game is debilitating as well forcing scrambling defenses out of the attack. Bonneville coach Chantal McMurtrey said if the Bees are to repeat beating Bishop Kelly the first-round opponent nobody seems to know anything about is key. “It’s a long road back after you lose the first one,” McMurtrey said. “Sandpoint did it last year after losing to Rigby in the first round but it means you play five matches in a row to get to the title game. Kids get worn out. It’s a lot harder to do it that way. It has been done but it’s not the easy road for sure.” Quick dig: Rigby which claimed fourth last year faces runner-up Sandpoint in the first round. Since 2000. Sandpoint has won four titles (Bonneville has won three) so Rigby coach Cami Dodson isn’t overlooking the first game. However as Rigby upset Sandpoint in the state opener last year. Rigby isn’t intimidated either. “Sandpoint always has a very strong team,” Dodson said. “They jump serve a lot. But we also know we beat them because we did in the opening game last year so we’re hoping to go in and repeat that. But they are always strong so we have to be on our toes.” Quick dig: Sugar-Salem is the odds-on favorite this weekend as the Diggers shoot for their third straight 3A championship. This is charted territory for coach Trisha Chatterton and her Diggers. Brooke Hansen. Sofia Hepworth and Katelyn Palmer played roles in both championship runs. Chatterton is after her fourth championship since taking over in 1998. Furthermore. Sugar-Salem didn’t lose to a 3A team all season. The Diggers lost three matches to 4A powerhouse Bonneville and two to 5A stalwart Idaho Falls. Those losses might have prepared Sugar-Salem more than their easy 3A wins. “I feel like I know how to prepare them mentally to win a state tournament,” Chatterton said. “We’re not as strong physically as in the past but we’re as strong as in the past. We’ve been there play under pressure at state. That’s why we play these tournaments against 4A and 5A teams — to feel pressure.” The road to a third straight title becomes straighter if Sugar-Salem can get past Filer in the first round. Chatterton said Filer is as good as any other team in the field. “That first game will be a knock-down drag-out fight,” Chatterton said. “We are so not going to look past them. It kind of stinks that we have to play each other in the first round.” Quick dig: Firth enters the 2A tournament as a dark horse. After an up-and-down season. The Cougars put the pieces together at district claiming the District 6 crown. Opponents looking at Firth’s 13-14 record risk underestimating a squad that’s on a roll. Firth coach Carla Reeves said her team played tentatively through the year but has learned to be more aggressive at the net. “We’ve decided to go out and hit hard or go home,” Reeves said. “I’ve known since day one that I had firepower on the front line. I had to convince them they had firepower. They didn’t want to make mistakes.” With 2007 champion Challis moving down to 1A and 2007 runner-up Malad failing to make the cut. West Side and Valley figure to head a tight 2A field. Reeves said her team will have to adjust to playing taller teams at the state level. “I understand a lot of height is coming in. There’s not a lot of that in our district — we have blocked really well. So we’ll have to elevate and eliminate.” Quick dig: West Jefferson is back at the 2A tournament for a second straight year. This time around the Panthers hope to improve on last year’s 1-2 showing. First on the docket is Kamiah. Coach John Hansen and the Panthers don’t have much scouting on Kamiah other than it gets strong play at the net from middle and outside hitters and makes few mistakes. Quick dig: Challis returns to state for the third year in a row. However the Vikings will see some new faces. After winning the 2A tournament last year. Challis dropped to 1A. At 19-3. Challis has to be considered a top contender. However coach Debbie Sheppeard said the field is tough. All three teams from the Magic Valley Conference — Hagerman. Raft River and Challis — have a chance to win the championship. However the Vikings’ first-round opponent. Genesee has a strong program and is in the running every year. Challis has experience on its side. With seven players returning from last season’s title run the Vikings have prevailed in pressure situations before. Kristin Garlie provides power and intimidation factor in the middle and at setter Ashley McGowan places the ball where her teammates can do some damage. <a href="" title=""> <abbr title=""> <acronym title=""> <b> <blockquote cite=""> <cite> <code> <del datetime=""> <em> <i> <q cite=""> <strike> <strong>

"OBAMA is 11pt FAV vs McCAIN...1 Week Before Kick-Off !!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-11-03 09:10:49

VEGAS-RUNNER has moved "Steam" for almost every major betting syndicate through the years and was a well known "runner" in Las Vegas for many years before taking all that experience and knowledge and eventually began moving his own... Because I have always approached sports betting as a market where one side sets a price (Oddsmaker/Bookmaker).. and the other side decides whether it's too high or too low and bets accordingly... I just couldn't pass up the chance to compare and convert the After taking a look around the web at many of the off-shore sportsbooks who have posted a "price" on the upcoming election... I have concluded that the average lay price to Bet Senator Obama is about -700... Now that means that for every $100 you want to win.. you would have to lay $700 which ultimately makes Senator Obama an overwhelming favorite... The return price on Senator McCain is about +400 which means that for every $100 that you wager on him to win the Presidency next week you would get back $400... Which is a bit higher than what Boxer Bernard Hopkins paid just a week ago when he spoiled the party by derailing the "Younger". "Stronger" and "Expected Winner"... Kelly Pavlik... But since we are in the heart of the football season.. let's go ahead and convert those Prices into fair NFL "Point-Spread" equivalencies... And try and handicapp this election based on that price... For starters at a lay price of -700... Senator Obama would come into "game-day" at about an over Senator McCain... Which as most sports bettors would agree is a very big number to lay in professional football.. where parity is expected much more than in college sports... And usually most recreational bettors would be the one's who wouldn't mind laying such a big number... As for McCain that would mean he is a huge "double-digit" Dog heading into election/game-day... Because when it comes to sports which carry a point-spread you either "lay" or "take" the same amount of points which are being offered... But because this type of wager is a "Money-Line" Bet.. and the sportsbook keeps a nice hold for themselves for booking the action... In reality having Senator McCain installed as a +400 under-dog.. would be the equivalent to an NFL team getting around ... Which once again is a "Big Dog" in the NFL... and one that I am sure all of the "sharp" bettors would be lining up to back which would "steam" the line down I believe... To see just how big of a Favorite the sportsbooks have made Senator Obama heading into the final week before the election... This week in the NFL (Week 9).. the closest comparisons would be Jacksonville Jaguars who are a -9 point favorite on the road no less against the win-less Cincinnati Bengals.... Or like the Chicago Bears who are a -12.5 point favorite at home.. against the win-less Detroit Lions... Fortunately for Obama supporters he only needs to win.. in order to become our next President and not neccessarily by any particular amount of points.. but instead electorial votes. On the other hand. McCain supporters may find comfort in knowing that just last February 3rd.. the New York Giants who were an underdog of a point or two higher (Patriots -12.5).. went on to defeat the highly favored and highly touted New England Patriots by a score of 17-14... After some miraculous plays were made late in the game.. while the Patriots had felt they had the game in the bag... Will we see the Favorite. Obama come out on Election/Game-Day and cover the number like those 49ers & Cowboy teams we all remember... Or will the "live-dog" bite once more and pull off another exciting back-door cover.. just when we thought the outcome was final... The answer to that barring any problems in Florida this time around.. should be settled late Tuesday Night...24hrs after the Steelers and Redskins meet in Washington in a game that the oddsmakers have set at more or less a "Pick-em" (Redskins -1.5)... Either way with all the conflicting reports we should continue to hear and read about.. leading up to the "Big Game" on Tuesday. The only thing that I can confirm is that although the point-spread shows otherwise.. polls in the past have me believing that as of today neither candidate is a "Lock"... Best of Luck to Both Men and their Supporters. Vegas-Runner... Thanks Fellas... The strange thing about the election is how much it resembles sports betting when you look at "public perception" because the odds are obviously based on the polls.. which as we have found countless times in the past are not always a good indicator of what we could expect on "Game-Day"... Regardless of who wins and I try to refrain from putting my own personal political views out there... The one thing that has become extremely clear during both campaigns.. is that the american people are really adament about wanting change because we can all agree that the state of our country has really declined over the last administration which really put very little thought into our interests... And there are very few people in this country that can actually say that things are better today than when George Bush took office 8 yrs ago especially economically... VR I agree with you about the election resembling Sports Betting. On PAPER (POLLS) Obama SHOULD Win.... And Like SPORTS (Being Played out on the Field) Voters STILL have to punch that VOTING Ticket in the Voting Booth. NO ONE argues that THINGS are Worse( Economically) today than 8yrs ago. BUT Who's to say that it won't get WORSE Under a Democratic President? I had my Obama yard sign stolen and eggs thrown at my house last night. I live in a VERY republican neighborhood. Today. I removed the egg residue from my house and replaced the stolen yard sign with 2 Obama yard signs.. because *** them.

Firestone win Auten bring in and handle titles Akron to entertain USA Women's 8K Championship next year hoping it's a steppingstone to Olympic Trials in 2012 By Stephanie act Beacon Journal sportswriter The fifth annual Road Runner Akron Marathon is now only two days away but the day's biggest news features a highlight for the 2008 race. Road Runner officials will inform today that Akron has been chosen to entertain the 2008 USA Women's 8K Championship as move of next year's go. ''We're a known quantity with the leadership at USA Track and handle,'' said Dave Hunter an Akron attorney and spokesman for the Akron Marathon Charitable Corp. ''They've been watching what we've been doing since our inception and accept our energy and focus. They know that Akron has a great tradition of being a city that can rally and go together to put on a world-class event.'' It helped Akron's bid to entertain the women's 8K that for two consecutive years (2003-04) the city hosted the North American Men's Relay Championship as part of the marathon's events. In turn hosting the women's go helps pad the city's bear on when it comes to the possibility of hosting even bigger running events in the future. ''The women's 8K helps highlight our marathon and brings greater visibility to our area,'' said Steve Marks the Akron marathon fail. ''We undergo our sights set on hosting the Olympic Trials in 2012 and this is a steppingstone toward that goal.'' Akron was one of the finalists for hosting U. S. Olympic Team Trials this year but Boston was selected for the women's marathon trials and New York City for the men. So while Akron is out of the mix for hosting trials for the 2008 Beijing Olympics the city is building toward hosting events for elite runners with sights set on London in 2012. In the meantime next year's women's 8K distance ordain be making a return to the women's USA Running go plan for the first time since 2005. It features some of the beat U. S distance runners. Runners who could come to Akron consider Olympic medalist Deena Kastor from California multiple national back Katie McGregor from Minneapolis. 2004 Olympic aggroup member Jen Rhines of California and Amy Rudolph the 1998 and 1999 8K winner from Providence. R. I. ''The 8K is one of those distances that doesn't fit into the entertain city's plan every year,'' explained Jim Estes the USATF programs manager in Colorado. ''But when a city does entertain it it can do a lot to demonstrate that area's ability to communicate a variety of needs the elite athletes show and shows a commitment to a higher level of planning and displaying professional running.'' The fifth annual Road Runner Akron Marathon is now only two days away but the day's biggest news features a highlight for the 2008 go.
